			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>One of the most important health issues I stress to my patients is creating, or maintaining, heart health. The best ways to ensure heart health and its all-important job of developing nourishing blood to every part of your body is to prevent plaque buildup and reduced blood flow in arteries. Diet, exercise, lifestyle changes, and certain supplements can work together to accomplish this goal!</p>
<p>In this first of a two-part series, I would like to explain to you a little about what coronary artery disease and blocked arteries can mean. Then we&#8217;ll talk about the proactive things you can do to avoid these conditions naturally without drugs or surgery.</p>
<p>Part II will deal with a controversial subject chelation therapy. Chelation methods of detoxing arteries with natural supplements have been an alternative medicine approach to arterial plaque for several years now.<span id="more-206"></span></p>
<p>First I would like to give you a little background on coronary artery disease and arterial blockages, how they develop and how you can prevent them with diet, exercise and supplements and cut your risk for heart attack, stroke, drugs and by passes!</p>
<p>Coronary Artery Disease and Blocked Arteries</p>
<p>Many people do not realize they have coronary artery disease, or arterial plaque build-up, until they wind up in an emergency room with an attack of angina (heart pain), or a heart attack! Both can be caused by the arteries of the heart not getting enough blood, usually from plaque buildup.</p>
<p>It was previously thought that a high saturated fat diet was the primary cause of arterial plaque. However, the French Paradox came along and taught us that oxidation has a lot more to do with cholesterol turning into those arterial plaques and blockages.</p>
<p>You see, the French people eat a pretty high saturated fat diet but they also drink a lot of red wine! This led to the discovery of a very important chemical in red wine called resveratrol. This is a powerful anti-oxidant which helps keep cholesterol lipids in blood from oxidizing into those arterial clogging plaques. Cholesterol undergoes oxidation first before it hardens into plaque. Ensuring that we get enough anti-oxidants in our diet to prevent oxidation, then, is key!</p>
<p>Who Is At Risk?</p>
<p>As I tell my patients, there is no hard and fast picture of the person who will develop coronary artery disease. It depends on a few factors such as:</p>
<p>1. Do you eat an unhealthy diet low in vitamins/antioxidants?<br />
2. Do you smoke?<br />
3. Do you exercise regularly?</p>
<p>Prevent Blocked Arteries and Heart Disease</p>
<p>As I advise my patients, keeping your arteries flowing freely with low risk of heart disease involves a three-fold approach on your part. However, that effort will reward you with enough heart health and stamina to live your life to the fullest into old age! Let&#8217;s look at what this entails:</p>
<p>• Diet &#8211; Arterial disease is not all about how much saturated fat you eat. Although I do recommend limiting saturated animal fat to 25-30 grams a day, I think it more important to prevent these fats from oxidizing and turning into plaque. Diets rich in anti-oxidants and polyphenols help dissolve saturated fats and stop oxidation. These include red wine, green apples, olive oil, oolong/green/white teas, Omega-3 rich nuts, coconut oils, apple cider vinegar. Add high fiber foods like beans, peas, whole grains, to absorb saturated fats and remove them through elimination before they enter the bloodstream as lipids.</p>
<p>• Exercise &#8211; Interval aerobic exercise, walking, running, bicycling, elliptical, stair stepper, treadmill, jumping rope, your choice. Interval exercise is warming up slowly for 10 minutes and then going at your capacity for 1-2 minutes then slowing down to a resting pace for 3 minutes and repeating for a set of 6 intervals. If you haven&#8217;t done aerobic exercise for a long while, do a slower warm-up, and try for half your capacity for 1 minute for 2 weeks. Slowly increase every week and build a higher capacity. This helps your heart adjust to sudden demanding loads. It also builds good HDL and lowers LDL (bad) choleserol and burns body fat. Also, 20 minutes 3 x a week of weight training. This creates muscle and burns fat even at rest.</p>
<p>• Supplements &#8211; 1,000 mg/daily Omega-3 fish and krill oils boost HDL and lower LDL cholesterol; 1-2 gm/daily of Vitamin C builds collagen which strengthens arterial walls. CoQ-10, 100 mg, is a crucial anti-oxidant that works with Vitamin E to attach to LDL cholesterol and prevent oxidation. As we age CoQ10 levels decrease so it is important to supplement them. Other powerful anti-oxidants include resveratrol (found in red wine, dark red grapes and berries), pomegranate juice, and green tea. Niacin (and other B vitamins) is also effective at reducing LDL and boosting HDL cholesterol, 1-3 gm/day. Chelation supplements which contain EDTA, and antioxidants, which we&#8217;ll talk about in more detail in Part II.</p>
<p>• Smoking &#8211; Quit! Smokers are at much higher risk of developing arterial plaque because of the toxins in cigarette smoke which contribute to oxidation damage in your body.</p>
<p>There you have the basics of what I recommend to keep your arteries free from obstructing plaques and keep your heart from suffering serious, if not life-threatening, consequences.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Weight is almost a constant obsession with Americans. We fear the scale, and judgmental stares. We secretly believe that being overweight or obese is because of our lack of self control. Sometimes we become angry at ourselves or depressed because of our weight. Body dysmorphic disorder is a condition that is common in the United States. This is manifested by a personâ€™s fixation on their physical appearance and small or nonexistent flaws. This is considered a psychiatric disorder that is growing in prevalence. Surveys show that more than 85 percent of Americans believe that they should lose weight.</p>
<p>However, sometimes we reach a point where we have little control over our weight. Of course we need to be healthy. We should work to avoid obesity or get ourselves safely out of it, because it is a serious danger to health. But other than that: exercise regularly, eat nutritiously and balanced meals, take a good multivitamin, and give yourself a break. There are many factors about our weight such as genetics and environment that we cannot control. Many people will never have the body of a model no matter how hard they work for it and that is all right. Most models are airbrushed and starving.<span id="more-533"></span></p>
<p>Some fat is actually good for us. Fat cells act as a cushion for organs and insulate us against cold temperatures. Women naturally develop more fat than men because their bodies are prepared for pregnancy, a time when some fat reserves are necessary. Some believe that your body sets its own fat minimum, and once you reach that point your body refuses to let go of any more fat in an effort to protect itself for the future. We also now know more about the fat cells themselves. You will usually have the same number of fat cells throughout adulthood; the difference comes in the size of the fat cells. Based on lifestyle decisions, they can either shrink or expand. A study was done with rats that were put on a starvation diet. They lost a small degree of fat and then the diet took its toll on their muscles, connective tissues, and organs before getting rid of any more fat. This is why crash diets and eating disorders are so dangerous, you end up harming more than helping.</p>
<p>Taking diet pills is not the answer to healthy living, most of the time they are just plain bad for you. If you are sincerely interested in losing weight, then it will take effort, and these promises of having the fast and easy way are usually not good. Evaluate different diet plans before you choose one. Avoid those that focus on one particular food above all others or that cut out an entire food group or nutrient. You need to eat a variety of things to maintain good health. Multivitamins are also a good idea in a diet because it is difficult to get all the necessary nutrients daily.</p>
<p>The important thing is finding the right balance. Donâ€™t feel the need to cut yourself off from sweets forever. We need to be sensible in our intake but a moderate amount of sweet tasting goodies in a diet is shown to help the diet work out in the long run.  We need to take care of ourselves and be healthy without judging ourselves too harshly or obsessing about our appearance. As we come to know our body better and accept it we will become happier, healthier people.</p>

In 2006 it was estimated that at least 200,000 enthusiasts can be found all over the US. The sport has become safer over the years due to innovation in kite design, safety release systems, and proper instruction. There are all types of riding styles, including wakestyle, waveriding, freestyle, cruising, and jumping.</p>
<p>Kiteboarding and kitesurfing is strenuous and often requires bursts of energy followed by extended periods of sustained endurance. Because so many different muscles and joints are used in the sport, it can often take its toll on the body. Many enthusiasts are seeking out the best nutrition advice to keep their muscles and joints in good repair so that they can perform well on the water. A lot of mixed advice is floating aroundâ€”here are a few suggestions that have proven helpful to most kiteboarders.<span id="more-1117"></span></p>
<p>Donâ€™t neglect the little habits that go a long way. Your body is creating an entire new body for your baby that needs essential vitamins to get started. If you are not fortified with these vitamins, either you or your baby will go without, causing weakness or complications.</p>
<p>As you plan your diet, donâ€™t forget to drink plenty of water to keep your cells hydrated and your entire body running smoothly. Water and milk should be your first choice when considering a beverage. When you are pregnant you will need to eat more calories than usual, but make sure they are rich with the substances you need to stay strong.  <span id="more-482"></span></p>
<p>It is essential that you have a variety of foods. Unless you have specific limitations on what you can eat, you should eat an assortment of fruits, vegetables, grains, meats and beans, dairy, and healthy oils in order to get all the proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, and minerals required in pregnancy. You should fill your menus with foods that meet these diverse requirements and that meet your own personal tastes.</p>
<p>Cravings frequently occur for some women during pregnancy. One type of craving, called pica, causes urges to eat non-nutritive substances such as dirt, ice, wax, grass, chalk, paper, etcâ€¦ You should not eat your pica cravings. They sometimes indicate a type of vitamin or mineral your body is missing in your diet such as an iron deficiency. Junk food, sugars, and fats may also cause cravings, which are the cravings you use your good judgment in determining whether to follow or not. On occasion moderate intake of these foods is okay. However, you are consuming empty calories that do not aid you or your baby. Be careful to give in rarely. On the other hand, you can always give in to cravings that contribute to a healthy, balanced diet, because these types of cravings often point to something your body needs.</p>
<p>There are some vitamins and minerals that are especially needed during pregnancy. These include calcium, folic acid, and iron.</p>
<p>You need calcium not only to strengthen your bones, but also to develop and strengthen the bones of your baby. Calcium is stored within your bones, and if you are not taking enough to support you and your child, your body will remove it from your bones to compensate. This is not something that you will notice right away, but will leave you more susceptible to osteoporosis down the road. You can get calcium from dairy products (approximately 4 cups of milk a day cover your calcium requirements) and also oranges, broccoli, and almonds.</p>
<p>Because folic acid is most needed in the first month of pregnancy, it should be taken regularly before conception when possible. Folic acid prevents some birth defects such as spina bifida. You can find folic acid in dark green vegetables such as spinach; however, it is difficult to get all your folic acid requirements from diet alone. Most physicians recommend taking a supplement.</p>
<p>Anemia, or lack of iron, is always an increased risk during pregnancy. Your body needs extra iron to create the placenta and extra blood needed for gestation. If your body does not have enough iron, your red blood count decreases causing weakness and fatigue. Foods high in iron include beef, pork, seafood, beans, and green vegetables.</p>
<p>Donâ€™t feel overwhelmed. Prenatal vitamins are a good way to insure you are getting the nutrients you need. With multivitamins and good planning, you are on your way to a healthy pregnancy.</p>

People think about the huge linemen in the NFL with large bellies and wide butts.  Or they think about the competitive weight lifters who have nothing but muscle on their bodies, and usually take illegal supplements in order to get that way.  Yet, Bulk isnâ€™t the enemy of a person that is trying to get their body into better shape.  Adding bulk to your frame will add more muscle to your frame.  While this will add weight to the scale at the beginning of your weight loss program, it will actually have major weight loss benefits in the future.</p>
<p>Lean muscle is the best way to help your body to increase its metabolism.  There is a proportion that works to help you lose weight; the more lean muscle that your body has on its frame the more calories that your body will burn.  Even when your body is idle it will burn up to the same number of calories, depending on how much lean muscle you have, that you will burn doing a complete cardio session at the gym.  The reason your body will burn more calories is due to muscle requiring upkeep.  Unlike fat that is designed to be efficiently stored in your body, muscle must be up kept by the burning of the calories.  When you are trying to add bulk to your frame you should try to help your body to build lean muscles.<span id="more-1098"></span></p>
<p>The best way to help your body to create lean muscle is by engaging in resistance based training.  Lifting weights and stretching exercises are great ways to help your body to build long lean muscles.  When you are weight training it is important to add variety to your workout.  You shouldnâ€™t be doing the same program for more than a month.  This is due to the strain that resistance training has on your body, and also because you can miss certain muscle groups if you are constantly doing the same exercises.  When you are starting to add lean muscles to your frame you should try to focus on endurance based exercises.  This means that you should choose exercises that consist of lower weight and more repetitions.</p>
<p>Endurance based training is the best way to help your body to quickly build lean muscles.  Yet, there are other things you can do to help your body to create lean muscles.  One of the best ways is to add items to your nutritional diet which will help you to have more endurance.  Omega-3 fatty acids are a great and easy way to help your body to have more endurance.  Studies have shown that athletes who have Omega-3 fatty acids in their bodies were able to outperform other athletes.  Omega-3 fatty acids allow the body to absorb more oxygen into the blood stream, and to strengthen the heart.  Taking a dietary supplement with fish oil is a great way of adding Omega-3 fatty acids to your system.  It is good to take a dietary supplement because Omega-3 fatty acids arenâ€™t naturally produced in the human body but can only be taken into the body through digestion.</p>
<p>It is important to consult your health care professional before starting to take any new dietary supplement, but to get the most out of your body and your workout it is important to do everything you can to help your body to create lean muscle.</p>
