Published: Aug 25th, 2010 | Author: admin Add Comment

As we get older our bodies become more fragile and we may feel like we don’t have the strength or stamina to get out and exercise. However, even in the face of old age, it’s important to get our bodies moving to preserve and improve our health. Some people over the age of 65 are just giving up, assuming that they’ll never again see the good shape they were in during their younger years. The truth is they are dead wrong!

As our bodies age, we do not recover from physical exertion as quickly as we once did. Do you remember how resilient you were when you were young? Perhaps you could run for miles, play tennis for hours, lift weights or even chop wood in your parents’ backyard! Nowadays, many of those actions might seem unthinkable to you. Challenge yourself to revisit a more youthful state of mind. Sure, you may not be able to run a marathon, swing an ax, or pump iron like you once did, but there are many activities you can still perform to keep your body feeling young and healthy. As mentioned before, it takes a lot longer to recover from stress being placed on your body now than it used to. With that said, you simply have to increase your physical fitness level over time. Published: Aug 19th, 2010 | Author: admin Add Comment

Lifestyle factors are important. For example, studies have shown reduced cognitive decline amongst older people who walk regularly. By exercising for a fit body, you also benefit from improved blood flow and oxygen supply to the brain, which improves mental acuity, balance and motor skills as well. Exercise also causes the release of “feel good hormones” or endorphins.  Some depressed people benefit so much from exercise that they are able to forgo their antidepressants, which are sometimes the cause of memory problems. Another benefit of exercise was seen in a study where it  was found that the brain produced significantly more of an important brain cell protein growth factor after exercise, increasing mental acuity and memory.

People who eat a lot of leafy green vegetables and eat fish at least once a week have also been found to show reduced cognitive decline with aging. Another important finding is that sugar can be a cause of memory decline. Studies have shown reduced blood supply to the dentate gyrus in the hippocampus, an area involved in memory formation, after a high sugar meal resulting in a blood sugar spike. This is a finding that has been seen in diabetics. It is therefore very important to watch your diet and to control diabetes. (more…)

Fact Sheets Home Health Care

Published: Jul 16th, 2010 | Author: admin Add Comment

Home health care helps seniors live independently for as long as possible, given the limits of their medical condition. It covers a wide range of services and can often delay the need for long-term nursing home care.

More specifically, home health care may include occupational and physical therapy, speech therapy, and even skilled nursing. It may involve helping the elderly with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, and eating. Or it may include assistance with cooking, cleaning, other housekeeping jobs, and monitoring one’s daily regimen of prescription and over-the-counter medications.

At this point, it is important to understand the difference between home health care and home care services. Although they sound the same (and home health care may include some home care services), home health care is more medically oriented. While home care typically includes chore and housecleaning services, home health care usually involves helping seniors recover from an illness or injury. That is why the people who provide home health care are often licensed practical nurses, therapists, or home health aides. Most work for home health agencies, hospitals, or public health departments that are licensed by the state.

How Do I Make Sure That Home Health Care Is Quality Care?
As with any important purchase, it is always a good idea to talk with friends, neighbors, and your local area agency on aging to learn more about the home health care agencies in your community. (more…)

Colon Cancer, What you will be told and what you wont be told

Published: Jul 14th, 2010 | Author: admin Add Comment

I have just met up with a long time friend of mine, only to find he had spent time in hospital undergoing surgery after a diagnosis of bowel cancer. My friend Tom, whose knowledge about cancer of the colon was limited, naturally accepted all the treatments recommended by his health professional.

Tom had surgery in which they removed a section of his colon and his surgeon informed him afterwards that he had got it all. What Tom wasn’t told was they had got all the cancer they could see but because individual cancer cells are only visible through a microscope there were possibly thousands of rogue cells left behind. He also wasn’t told the surgical removal of cancer doesn’t address the reasons why the cancer first grew so it won’t stop it growing again in the future or shifting to another location. (more…)
