Addiction to a drug or to alcohol is an all-consuming compulsion, one which demands attention, almost to the exclusion of all else. It can be a full-time job for the addict. Getting drugs or alcohol and consuming them, then being stoned or drunk occupies a large portion of their time.
In the case of drugs such as heroin or cocaine, using is definitely a morning to night occupation. The addict will wake up and look to see how much drug there is for that day’s consumption. If the supply is low, the planning of how to get more of the drug takes up the morning’s activities. Faked prescriptions, phone calls to borrow money, scams, and other methods of getting the price of drugs together is always first on the to-do list. (more…)
The fact that cigarettes contain cancer causing chemicals is not anything new. For years, cancer experts have been advising the public to kick the habit and decrease their cancer risk. The connection between alcohol and cancer, however, is not as well known. Skin cancer is only one of the many cancers that can be caused from smoking and alcohol use.
Actinic cheilitis is a condition that affects the lips. Affected lips become puffy, dry, cracked, or ulcerated and change color, often to bright red or white. It is considered to be a pre-cancerous condition. In six to ten percent of cases, it develops into squamous cell carcinoma. The condition can affect people of all ages, regardless of sex, but typically strikes men over fifty. Risk increases with age. Actinic cheilitis is caused by a lifetime accumulation of UV damage. Smoking, alcohol, and poor oral hygiene are also believed to increase the risk of this condition. (more…)
A lot of people hear the term alcohol blackout and they believe this to be the same thing as “passing out.” They are not the same and it is an important distinction so allow me to clarify this for you. Passing out occurs when a person has had way to much to drink and the alcohol basically puts them to sleep. When they have passed out from drinking they lie down and appear to be fully asleep. When this happens it will be difficult or even impossible to wake them up. This is passing out.

There are many different ways to cut down wine, and some people will call them tricks to cut down wine, but really, they are basic common sense.
Of course, water in the wine is as old as winemaking. If you are at a party and really do not want to drink a lot of wine but need to have a drink in your hand, add a bit of water in your wine glass. The water and wine will look like a drink and yet still keep you from getting dehydrated and it will also allow you to reduce the amount of alcohol you’re ingesting
Another way to cut down wine that is quite tasty, is to add a fizzy beverage. Many people call them wine spritzers, but whether a wine spritzer or wine coolers, it’s basically the same drink.
You’ll be making a drink that is half and half. You can actually use 7-Up, club soda, or any other spritzer that you like and you mix the two of them together, and again reducing your alcohol level down. This does not help with rehydration like watering your wine, but it can allow you to drink without consuming a lot of alcohol.

Everybody comes home from a long day and thinks about sitting on the couch while cracking open an ice-cold beer. After all, that is the reason it was created, to be a refreshing and relaxing drink enjoyed after a hard day’s work. Nobody could have possibly guessed that it would become such an addicting and dangerous substance. On the other hand, if consumed responsibly and drank on occasion, it is very unlikely that a person will become reliant on it. However, this is not always the case in everyone’s life.
Unfortunately, there are people out there that choose excessive drinking every day, and sometime multiple times a day, and these people end up becoming an alcoholic. Alcoholics usually end up causing a lot of damage due to their addiction. For instance, alcohol can severely damage your liver, ruin relationships with loved ones, get you in trouble with the law, and strain a person’s financial funding.
When people finally see that they have a problem, there are actions that can be taken to help alcoholics find their way back. Society has come up with alcohol rehab centers that help alcoholics get sober.

You may rightfully get upset when you find out someone you love is an addict. You may think that the person chooses to take drugs for fun. Choosing to take drugs is not a choice in the life of an addict. He or she is addicted to drugs and it should be treated like a disease.
Estimates of the total overall costs of substance abuse in the United States exceed half a trillion dollars each year. That includes $181 billion for illicit drugs, $168 billion for tobacco and $185 billion for alcohol. What is important to know though is the cost of drug addiction extends to every citizen in the United States of America. We pay for the drug addiction through family disintegration, loss of employment, failure in school, domestic violence, child abuse, and other crimes.
Drug addiction changes the structure and function of the brain and is frequently referred to as a disease because of these characteristics. The brain’s communication system is disrupted and changed from repeated use of substances and so when the addict stops using drugs, a craving is induced. It is for this very reason that addicts are compelled to do whatever it takes to purchase more drugs; prostitution, theft or other crimes. In fact, most incarcerations are somehow directly or indirectly tied to addiction.
